The NeoLucida is a portable camera lucida: an optical drawing aid that allows you to trace what you see. Based on century-old designs but comprehensively redesigned for the 21st century, the NeoLucida is perfect for artists, scientists, designers, or hobbyists-anyone who wants to draw.

Originally patented in 1807, by the 1830s camera lucidas were everywhere. Fine artists, scientists, naturalists, explorers, archeologists, architects-all used the camera lucida for drawing in the days before photography.

Our design is lightweight (7oz., or 199 g), sturdy, compact enough to fit in a handbag, highly adjustable, totally non-electronic, and effective in all lighting conditions. If you enjoy drawing from life, or if you're interested in experiencing for yourself how the Old Masters could possibly have created such accurate, lifelike drawings-then the NeoLucida is for you.

A great piece of kit

Rip off. Reflected image too tiny to be of functional use in drawing. False advertising

Wasn’t good

Hi, As a portrait painter myself I was very interested to try the NeoLucuda. I’ve been intrigued by the idea that artists such as Holbein have used such a device and wanted to try it out for myself . Everything about the product was great, the delivery, the packaging, the simple design , the instructions, however when I came up use it I was very disappointed. It took a little while to get used to looking through the prism but that was ok, what was disappointing was the tiny proportion of the visual field that I could see- a section about 2 x 5 cm in area. Just enough to be able to see the eyes and nose area of a person sitting across the table from me and not much else, to see other parts of their face I needed to move the device up (or down) but then it became misaligned which was really frustrating. I imagine this might be something you could get used to but then again why bother? After struggling for 15 minutes to draw a stationary pot plant my partner reviewed the results and said I could have drawn it much better and faster by eye. For me the main problem is the size of the ‘projected’ image . On your demo videos the ‘projected’ image seems to cover an A5 piece of paper which just isn’t true. I’ve seen there is a Maxi version which might solve this problem but I don’t want to depend anymore money. I was really keen to use this product and to support it as an initiative but I’m afraid ii came away feeling a bit duped.

Very dissapointing with almost no practicle instructions at all...

Though I'm well able to draw freehand, I bought the neo lucida based on the advertising, as I thought it might inspire me to get back into drawing after a covid hiatus....when it arrived i was dissapointed to find that it was trickier to use had I had been led to believe, and with almost no practical instructions included, I now have to find time to play with it in terms of lighting etc to discover how to make the best of it........So far consequently it is most definitely not inspiring

Thanks for the feedback! I'll link our FAQ section below. It contains a lot of helpful information. If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out to us at Thanks!
